The team led by Pascal Moser and specialists from the Swiss company Oetiker set up a workstation at STORY in Thusis for a week this January. The company is world-renowned for its reliable and high-performance fastening and assembly solutions in a wide range of industries. In the automotive industry in particular, however, it is a valuable partner with high standards of quality and reliability.
The team also traveled to Thusis with this attitude and prepared meticulously for this week. There was a challenge to solve. And to deliberately change the setting. With the STORY rooms, we were able to provide the framework that they set up for this week together. A machine was installed in the coworking space, which was repeatedly used for concrete experiments. We are happy that we were able to provide the right power supply with our infrastructure. The workshop infrastructure, with whiteboards and the available walls, was used almost to the last space to plan the procedure together, work on open questions in break-out sessions, analyze and create new hypotheses that needed to be verified. With our workshop in the sports store, we were even able to assist with machining modifications (see picture).
Throughout the week, the team stayed in the lodge in the functional rooms, which were created for team retreats of this kind that last several days and nights. Because even the times when they were not working directly on the challenge contributed their value. The joint planning for the week in terms of catering included a wide variety of approaches. From an aperitif in our lounge to a tavolata for dinner. And with the possibility of involving various local restaurants, we were able to put together a varied catering program to keep our energy levels up. In our communal kitchen with two fully equipped cooking stations, the team also cooked and fed each other twice during the week. And the standards were very high. In my role as bar hero, I was even able to see the results for myself one evening and was invited to join them for dinner.
On Friday, the last day of the team workation, you could see the intensity of the week in the participants' faces. Yes, of course, some of the evenings were a little longer. But from my external perspective, they always played an important part in ensuring that the joint challenge could be viewed from a different perspective and with a little distance and discussed further. And, of course, it also strengthened the team community!
Many thanks to the Oetiker team! We are delighted that you have enlivened the STORY in Thusis so much. Thank you for choosing the location for your week together and for embarking on this experiment with us. We were all able to learn a lot - we received a lot of feedback from you and were able to observe how you used the location. And as part of your challenge, you were able to go home or back to the store with new hypotheses that needed to be further validated. And, of course, bring the machine back safely.
When asked what you would have done differently during your week, I heard from you that, in hindsight, you would have liked to have planned more time for an outdoor activity. Well, we are all still learning. I personally like this insight in particular. I'm very much convinced that it's always worth stepping out of your comfort zone and taking a look at things from the outside. A walk in the countryside, a short hike or a bike tour together help to broaden your horizons and give you new ideas.
